Intersections are common locations of frequent congestion and crashes. Traffic signals and stop signs are natural sources of delay because they stop one direction of traffic to allow another to proceed. The modern roundabout design lessens these sources of delay with yield signs that control the entering traffic and roadway curvature that reduces vehicle speeds on each approach. As a result, all vehicles slow to enter and move through the roundabout. They do not stop unless waiting for a gap in traffic on the flowing roadway. Thus, while speeds are lower, more vehicles can get through with less delay.
